I was watching the Ultimate Fighter with my fiance the other day and was enjoying the wonderful TV ads for Modern Warfare 2, Left 4 Dead 2 and Borderlands. I was thinking, "Wow, game marketing and advertising sure has come a long way. It's great that they show all in game footage and just let gamers see exactly what the game is." I remember back in the day when all they used to show was the CGI pre rendered cinematics.
Then in the next commercial break we were assaulted with numerous terrible Sony 1st party ads. Grand Turismo PSP has one of the worst ads ever. It shows no in game footage and just shows two assholes driving around a race track. Not compelling. Then it was a stupid ad with the price drop where Sony does it's best to offend it's consumers by portraying someone interested in a price drop rumor as a fat, ugly and stupid middle aged man sitting alone in his house. Then comes the Uncharted 2 ad, with the boyfriend telling the Sony rep that he's worried because his girlfriend thinks uncharted is a movie.... ho hum. I like ads that show what the game is about, show off gameplay footage and don't try to be funny. If your game is good, your graphics and gameplay should speak for itself, you shouldn't have to try to push humor or stupid pop culture references.
Even though Sony's got some great games, I feel that their marketing is way behind the curve.
